From USA to Peru: How Help Perú Supports Education and Climate Efforts

22 July 2024

Building strategic bridges for sustainable impact

Founded in 2013 by a group of Peruvian professionals living in New York city, Help Perú has been dedicated to provide opportunities for underprivileged Peruvians to create a healthy, equitable, and educated society, while being respectful to the environment. By building partnerships with local leaders and community organizations, Help Perú develop, grow, and support sustainable programs.

As an advocate and educator, both among Peruvian diaspora members in USA and key stakeholders in Peru, Help Perú is making extraordinary efforts with limited resources and great vision. The organization’s increasing participation and presence in networking platforms have allowed it to build strategic bridges in the face of climate change.

Sharing good practice

Represented by the Deputy Director, Adriana Delgado, Help Perú was invited as panelist to DEMAC talk “The role of diaspora in responding to climate-related disasters and supporting the resilience of local communities to environmental degradation” during Humanitarian Networks and Partnerships Week (HNPW) 2024.

Help Perú highlighted its strengths and challenges while implementing long-term initiatives in the Andes and Amazon region, in relation to climate change mitigation and adaptation, through integral and participatory approaches. Adriana underscored that the Peruvian diasporas harbor valuable expertise that make them important players in humanitarian activities: they are culturally sensitive to their areas of intervention, have pre-established trust with local communities, know local NGOs with climate expertise, and are responding in areas of Peru where very few institutional humanitarian actors are.

Help Perú do not only believe in integral and holistic approach but implements robust mechanisms to ensure community resilience. This is key not only for Climate Change related projects but any other kind of projects. We believe that communities should lead their own development.

Diaspora efforts under the spotlight

The DEMAC panel discussion at HNPW 2024 provided an important space to reiterate, that the efforts of diaspora organizations, such as Help Perú, need to be acknowledged by institutional humanitarian actors. Diaspora organizations are not only fast responders with local expertise, but are also present before and after emergencies, ensuring consistent, long-term recovery and development.

While Help Perú is determined to continue building capacities, empower communities, and promote dialogues, it wishes to connect and coordinate with institutional humanitarian organizations, as well as with other diaspora actors, to exchange experience and identify opportunities for cooperation.
