The First Steps Towards Change
In 1991, Fadi Al-Dairi established himself in the UK, after spending part of his childhood in Syria. This journey was not just a physical relocation; it was a profound emotional transition that shaped his vision for the future. As co-founder of the humanitarian organization Hand in Hand for Aid and Development (HIHFAD), formerly known as Hand in Hand for Syria, Fadi has dedicated his life to give something back to Syria.
I could not sit back at the time and watch civilians suffer without lending them a hand.
HIHFAD: A Response to Crisis
Since 2012, HIHFAD has been at the forefront of providing life-saving support to innocent civilians of a country struggling with conflict and hardship. The organization has now evolved to encompass a dedicated team of over 1,200 staff members, including on-the-ground workers and operational offices in Turkey, along with an international presence in London and Birmingham. Over time, HIHFAD has expanded their efforts to include neighboring regions, such as the Occupied Palestinian Territories and Yemen.
Through delivering community-based humanitarian and development interventions, HIHFAD aspires to provide undiscriminated support to vulnerable groups, promote social justice & welfare, and foster durable solutions. Additionally, HIHFAD has developed vocational trainings for women heads of households, giving them the chance to gain independence and move from traditional aid to building sustainable communities.

Overcoming Challenges with Resilience
However, the initial years of HIHFAD were not easy; witnessing the stark contrast between Syria’s prosperous past and its current state of crisis was heart-wrenching. With millions displaced and the conflict ongoing, HIHFAD had to constantly adapt to provide a dignified response that met the changing needs of the community.
For me, it was very difficult to start with given that I witnessed Syria through its peak and during time of prosperity. I could not imagine that there is a need to start fundraising and provide support to those in need of help.
Despite the exhaustion and feelings of helplessness, Fadi draws strength from the impact of HIHFAD. This program is deeply personal, as it connects to Fadi´s late mother, who inspired him with her resilience despite her disability. He draws motivation from her legacy to help others in Syria.
What are the hopes for the future of Syria?
Looking ahead, Fadi envisions a Syria rebuilt by its own people, rooted in peace and reconciliation. Inspired by the resilience he has witnessed in countries like Germany, he dreams of a future where Syrians can return to their homes and restore their communities, free from the shadows of war.
Fadi has fostered a meaningful connection with his community in his homeland, showing unwavering compassion and humility. He has generously shared his expertise and provided steadfast support, consistently taking the initiative to amplify their voices, share their stories, and convey their messages. At the same time, he ensures they remain informed about the critical humanitarian realities affecting them. Through his dedication, Fadi has built a powerful and effective advocacy platform, bolstered by the exceptional efforts of a talented and committed team.
