CHA CONFERENCE 2024

The Centre for Humanitarian Action (CHA) is a Berlin-based think tank founded in 2018, which engages in independent analysis, initiates debates and spreads the word about humanitarian action and principles amongst the general public. The CHA is an initiative of humanitarian non-governmental organisations to strengthen German and international humanitarian action.

The CHA Conference 2024 will focus on the topic “Climate & humanitarian crises and the lack of a joint response – Needs, narratives and necessities” and will take place on 4 & 5 June at bUm Berlin and online.

Climate change is the biggest challenge of our times, affecting all sectors of society across the globe. In humanitarian terms, this translates into an exponential increase in needs, and beckons new ideas, answers, and ways of working.

Although it is clear that climate change is not only a humanitarian challenge, there is still a lack of joint responses. Effectively addressing its causes and effects requires improved collaboration between the humanitarian and climate communities.

This is the aim of this year’s CHA conference: We want to bring people, positions, and ideas from these two communities together. We seek to provide a platform for people to talk with — rather than to — one another, and to improve understanding between humanitarian and climate actors. Ultimately, we intend to reinforce a path towards envisioning and designing an effective, forceful, and determined cross-sectoral response to the climate crisis. In doing so we want to discuss topics like:

  • Conflict, fragility and climate vulnerability
  • Prioritization, Needs and Necessities
  • Loss and Damage
  • New forms of allyship and collaboration of unusual allies
