Diaspora Coordination Meeting: Flood Response in Somalia

To support the Somali diaspora's coordination and response to the floods, DEMAC, IOM, and GSD are pleased to invite you to the next flood response coordination meeting on Saturday, December 23rd. You can register for the meeting here and attend the meeting on zoom

Meeting time: 13.00-14.30 GMT (London)/14.00-15.30 CET (Brussel)/16.00-17.30 EAT (Nairobi)/08.00-09.30 ET (New York)

The purpose of the meeting is to share and exchange updates on the situation in Somalia and to continue coordination among diaspora responders in Somalia. During the previous meetings the topics addressed included the current flood situation, updates from various affected regions, urgent needs, fundraising efforts by the diaspora, coordination challenges, and emphasized the necessity for ongoing collaboration.

Some key figures from OCHA's Somalia Situational Report (4 Dec, 2023) are listed below:

  • Over 2.4 million affected by heavy rains in Somalia; 1 million displaced, 110 dead in 36 districts.
  • Concerns grow over water-borne diseases, especially cholera, in areas with limited healthcare.
  • 820,000 assisted so far (about 30% of affected); at least 37 boats used for supplies and rescues.
  • Light rain expected in coastal areas of M. Shabelle and L. Juba, and Banadir until Dec 5; rest of the country and Ethiopian highlands to stay dry.
  • 2023 Humanitarian Response Plan for Somalia, needing $2.6B for 7.6M vulnerable people, only 42% funded with a month left.
Please contact [email protected] or [email protected] if you have feedback on topics that you would like to discuss at the next meeting.
To ensure your activities are broadly shared and recognized, we want to gather more information about your humanitarian efforts in response to the flood. You can enter your information here.
The information you share will be included in the diaspora response map for the floods in Somalia, which is important for showcasing and sharing data about the Somali diaspora's humanitarian response.
