Launch: German Federal Foreign Office's new Strategy for Humanitarian Assistance

Humanitarian assistance is an integral part of Germany’s foreign and security policy, as outlined in the National Security Strategy. It reaches millions of people worldwide and helps to proactively mitigate the effects of crises and disasters, thereby avoiding the potentially much higher subsequent costs.

The humanitarian system is under significant pressure. The increasing number of crises and the growing global humanitarian needs are facing shrinking financial resources. While reform efforts within the humanitarian system are moving in the right direction, they still need to be intensified.

Germany is actively involved in adapting the humanitarian system to the challenges of our time. In this context, the new humanitarian strategy is focused on improving the efficiency and effectiveness of the humanitarian system, along with promoting measures such as humanitarian diplomacy and anticipatory humanitarian assistance.

The event will be opened by State Secretary Susanne Baumann, who will present the strategy, Germany’s priorities and the cooperation with national and international partners in humanitarian assistance.

Following the opening, a Panel Discussion on the future of humanitarian assistance will take place. The participants are:

  • State Secretary Susanne Baumann
  • Grace Mumo Muema, Resource Mobilization Manager, Puntland Minority Women Development Organization (PMWDO), Somalia (joining virtually)
  • Verena Knaus, Head, Global Office Berlin, UNICEF
  • Alessandra Gilotta, Head of the Anticipation Hub
  • Anica Heinlein, Board Member of the Association of German Development and Humanitarian Aid Non-Governmental Organizations (VENRO)
  • Boris Mijatović, Member of the Bundestag, Spokesperson for Human Rights and Humanitarian Assistance, Bündnis 90/Die Grünen

After the panel discussion, we invite you to exchange ideas with other participants over a refreshing drink and visit our humanitarian exhibition.
