Let's Shake Hands: an education initiative by Ukrainian kids for kids
30 March 2023
Let's Shake Hands is a free digital learning app created by Lepsky Ivan, a 15-year-old Ukrainian student based in the UK. The app aims to facilitate education and adaptation for Ukrainian children who have had to flee their homes and settle in new countries. With digital gadgets and tools becoming increasingly mainstream, Let's Shake Hands is a great example of how technology can be used for community building and crisis relief.
Since the beginning of the conflict, more than 8 million Ukrainians have been displaced across Europe (UNHCR, 2023), many of whom are children who have had to leave their schools behind. Let's Shake Hands connects these children with volunteer tutors from around the world who can help them learn new languages and school subjects. Through this project, Ukrainian children not only are able to continue their education but also make new friends, increase their network, and promote their well-being.
Children are the future of Ukraine. Let's lend a helping hand to them.
Join 10,000 volunteers around the world!
Let's Shake Hands has already attracted more than 10,000 volunteers who have become tutors for Ukrainian children.
The project is a great example of how digital means can improve community building during humanitarian crises and conflicts. Digital technologies allow diaspora and migrant organizations to increase their resilience and impact, as crises often threaten their ability to operate with traditional means. Additionally, migrants and members of the diaspora use technologies for information sharing and promotion, fundraising, and reaching a greater audience when advocating.
